Palm Springs, California

Updated: Apr 8, 2018

Palm Springs is a desert city located 100 miles east of Los Angeles. This city is most notably known for hiking, biking, horse riding, luxurious resorts and beautiful golf courses.

This was my first trip to Palm Springs and I decided to skip the resort part and just explore the nature.

The first place we went to was - Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. This is the the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world. It takes you 8000 feet uphill. Temperature change is drastic. While it was moderately warm in Palm Springs, uphill it was freeeezing ! The tramway drops you on a hill top where you can enjoy the lavish restaurant with great views of Palm Springs downhill. The view is amazing. Also, if you are dressed appropriately, you can go for a hike on the mountains. Well for me, I don’t know what I was thinking when I didn’t take a jacket with me and then had to borrow one even for going out of the restaurant to take pictures. It was freezing ! I think summers should be good though. Another thing to note is that it’s better to book the aerial tramway tickets beforehand. Even on a regular weekend, it is pretty full sometimes. You don’t want to miss the window.

While driving to the aerial tramway , you will see a deserted mountain range, with no trees no greenery, just stones ! At a point, it seems as if you’ve entered Stone Age. This was a very peculiar sight, I never saw hills like these anywhere else. And of course, as the name of the city suggests, there are Palm trees scattered everywhere.

Next, we went to Indian Canyons. It comprises of three major canyons - Palm Canyon, Andreas Canyon and Murray Canyon. These canyons offer great hiking opportunities in the shadow of beautiful Palm trees along with great flora and fauna peculiar to this area. As the name suggests, Indian Cayons were a home to the Cahuilla Indian tribe for 1000s of years.

For the nature lovers, there is a beautiful Moorten Botanical garden and Living Desert zoo showcasing beautiful flora and fauna of this area.

Other than the peculiar natural beauty, flora and fauna, Palm Springs is also very popular for luxurious resorts, casinos and golf grounds with stunning scenery of mountains. People visit Palm Springs as a leisure vacation spot. I don’t have much insight into that part of Palm Springs yet, as I intended to just explore the nature in this visit. Maybe next time !

Thanks for stopping by!
