Solvang (California) - far from the madding crowd
Solvang is a city in Southern California known for its Danish architecture. It is at a 4.5 hour drive from San Francisco. Solvang stands different from other places of California with its unique Danish architecture. This village was founded by a group of Danes in 1911. They might have traveled west to form a Danish colony far from the crazy midwestern winters. Solvang means sunny fields – which is true to its name in every sense. You find yourself in the middle of beautiful scenery and rare old time architecture giving you a feel of the peaceful old times. You are surrounded by some of the world’s finest wineries. Solvang is a part of Santa Ynez Valley which features around 60 finest wineries from around the world with a lot of tasting rooms all over the village Two major things I adore about Solvang – awesome food and architecture. It has plenty of authentic Danish bakeries and wooden windmills in this small cute village. Each and every building stands as a piece of art adding its flavor to the beautiful Danish architecture.
Another favorite – Danish Pancakes. I highly recommend Paula’s Pancake House . They have amazing pancakes and Danish sandwich. Get ready for a big wait if its a weekend, but worth it. Surrey cycles are also pretty fun. You can rent them for couple hours and get a feel of this beautiful town.
There is also an ostrich farm nearby. If you haven’t seen an ostrich, do visit this farm. It’s amazing how tall and strong they actually are !
Solvang is like a relaxing place. If you want to get away from the city life for couple days , head over to California’s little Denmark.
